Synopsis
Daily, global warming has become more and more prominent in every day discourse around the world and forest are a major nexus in this global challenge.
Globally, forests cover 31 percent of the world's land surface in a total area of just over 4 billion hectares and they play a vital role in balancing the ecosystem. Nearly a third of the world's land surface is covered with forest, with closed-canopy forest accounting for 4 - 5 billion hectares of land.
Daily, the felling of trees for various purposes is growing faster than the rate of planting of trees. Yearly, about 10 million hectares of land are cleared of trees which make deforestation among the biggest contributors to climate change.
Numerous factors associated with industrialization, demand for cheap energy by the poor, production of goods, agriculture, real estate development, etc are responsible for deforestation. Differences exist in the deforestation rates per country, the impact on CO2 emissions and ultimately climate change regimes.
Trees and forests are essential for climate protection, as they absorb carbon in significant volumes. Here, carbon is not just stored in the biomass of the trees themselves, but also in the ground. They do this on a permanent basis, and are far more cost-effective than any technical solution.
The task for humanity is to plant trees, increase the area of forested land and mitigate climate change. We want to identify 10 million people who will be “Speaking for Trees”.
