Synopsis

Preamble Floods happen when soil and vegetation cannot absorb water from downpours. Floods also occur when a river outbursts its banks and the water spills onto the floodplain. Natural processes such as hurricanes, cyclones and snow melt can cause floods. An assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change established the fact that human-caused emissions are causing temperature increases, in turn leading to more extreme weather.
